Today we learn how to discuss supply chain management in Spanish . We will define the supply chain and discuss the objectives and common activities in a typical supply chain.  We will review a simple example, then turn our focus to a recent phenomenon: the COVID toilet paper shortage. In this episode we will provide key vocabulary in supply chain management and translate the above sections into English.

Definición de la Cadena de Suministro

Una cadena de suministro es el conjunto de actividades, instalaciones y medios de distribución necesarios para llevar a cabo el proceso de venta de un producto en su totalidad. Esto incluye la búsqueda de materias primas, su posterior transformación y hasta la fabricación, transporte y entrega al consumidor final. En otras palabras, la cadena de suministro es una función estratégica y logística que involucra todas las operaciones que son indispensables para que una mercancía logre llegar al cliente final en óptimas condiciones. 

A supply chain is the set of activities, facilities and means of distribution that are necessary to complete a product's sales process in its entirety. This includes the sourcing of raw materials, their subsequent processing and perhaps manufacturing, transportation and delivery to the end consumer. In other words, the supply chain is a strategic and logistical function that involves all the operations that are required for a product to reach the end customer in optimal conditions.

Objetivo de la Cadena de Suministro

El objetivo principal de una cadena de suministro es satisfacer las necesidades del cliente final de la mejor manera posible. Esto incluye lo siguiente:

The main objective of a supply chain is to satisfy the needs of the end customer in the best possible way. This includes the following:

• Entregar los bienes y servicios a tiempo.  Deliver goods and services on time.
• Evitar las pérdidas o mermas innecesarias.  Avoid unnecessary losses or waste.
• Optimizar los tiempos de distribución.  Optimize distribution times. (Optimize lead times.)
• Manejo adecuado de inventarios y almacenes. Sound inventory and warehouse management.
• Establecer canales de comunicación y coordinación adecuados. Establish appropriate communication and coordination channels.
• Hacer frente a cambios imprevistos en la demanda, oferta u otras condiciones. Deal with unforeseen changes in demand, supply or other conditions.

• Planificación.  Planning.
• Administración de existencias.  Inventory management.
• Procesamiento de órdenes de compra.  Purchase order processing.
• Traslados y despacho.  Shipments and dispatch.
• Seguimiento y control de imprevistos. Follow-up and contingency planning.
• Servicio al cliente.  Customer service.
• Administración de garantías.  Warranty management.
• Procesamiento de pagos.  Payment processing.

Ejemplo Sencillo de una Cadena de Suministro: Las Manzanas

1-La compra y venta de las semillas, fertilizantes, herramientas y otros insumos necesarios para la plantación de manzanas.

2-La recolección y el empaque de las manzanas para la venta a los supermercados.

3-El transporte de las manzanas a los puntos de venta (supermercados o tiendas).

4-La venta directa de las manzanas a los consumidores finales, lo que incluye además los procesos de facturación y servicios post-venta (garantía si no se está satisfecho con el producto, etc.)

1-The purchase and sale of seeds, fertilizers, tools and other supplies needed for planting apples.

2-Harvesting and packing apples to be sold to supermarkets.

3-Shipping the apples to the points of sale (supermarkets or stores).

4-Direct sale of the apples to the end consumers, which also includes invoicing and post-sale services (warranty if not satisfied with the product, etc.)

Toilet Paper Case Study

Lo que el papel higiénico puede enseñarnos sobre las cadenas de suministro…

En el inicio de la pandemia de COVID-19, el papel higiénico se convirtió en un artículo codiciado (es decir, altamente deseado). Muchas ciudades y regiones emitieron órdenes de refugio en respuesta a la pandemia de coronavirus, lo que impulsó a la gente a comprar grandes cantidades de artículos domésticos. Muchos atribuyen la falta del papel higiénico a las interrupciones en la cadena de suministro. Pero la cadena de suministro era fuerte, y en realidad la escasez fue el resultado de las compras por pánico. Hay un concepto en la gestión de la cadena de suministro que se llama "efecto látigo", el cual dice que pequeños cambios en la demanda pueden provocar grandes oscilaciones en la cadena de suministro. What toilet paper can teach us about supply chains...

At the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, toilet paper became a coveted (i.e., highly desired) item.  Many cities and regions issued stay at home orders in response to the coronavirus pandemic, prompting people to purchase large quantities of household items. Many attribute the toilet paper shortage to disruptions in the supply chain. But the supply chain was strong, and in reality the shortage was the result of panic buying. There is a concept in supply chain management called the "bullwhip effect," which states that small changes in demand can cause large swings in the supply chain. In this case, a shortage of toilet paper causes stores to order much more. Toilet paper manufacturers monitor these signals of increased demand and increase production. When production adjusts to the "perceived" greater demand and toilet paper arrives at points of sale, customers already have a year's supply of toilet paper and do not buy anymore. Stores stop placing orders. Manufacturers reduce production. And so on until the situation stabilizes.

¿Acaso la escasez de papel higiénico durante COVID-19 fue el resultado de problemas en la cadena de suministro? No, la verdad es que no. La escasez se debió a las compras por pánico, pero el aumento de la demanda interrumpió la cadena de suministro. Los fabricantes de hoy aprovechan estas lecciones aprendidas durante los primeros días de la pandemia para diseñar cadenas de suministro más robustas y superar interrupciones imprevistas.

Was the toilet paper shortage during COVID-19 a result of problems in the supply chain? No, not really. The shortage was a result of panic buying, but the increased demand left the supply chain disrupted. Manufacturers today take these lessons learned during the early days of the pandemic to design more robust supply chains and overcome unforeseen disruptions.
