In this episode of Business Spanish, we continue our conversation with former Coca-Cola Mexico executive Sandra (listen to part 1 of her interview in Episode 2). Today she explains how she made the switch from corporate business woman to successful entrepreneur, and made lemonade from the lemons life threw her way.  First we introduce some vocabulary and practice exercises. Then during the interview, we pause to review each segment and explain key concepts.

Abandonar, dejar: to leave, quit (a job)

Tomar la decisión: to make the decision

Quedarse en casa: to stay at home

Inquieto:  restless, unable to stay still, fussy

Abrir un negocio: to start (open) a business

El negocio de eventos y banquetes:  events and catering business

El emprendedor, la emprendedora: entrepreneur

Tomé la decisión de abandonar mi carrera, de dejar mi trabajo para quedarme en casa con mis hijos. Pero como soy una persona inquieta, pronto decidí abrir mi propio negocio de eventos y banquetes.

I made the decision to leave my career, to quit my job and stay at home with my children. But being a person who just can’t sit still, I soon decided to start up my own events and catering business.

la renta de mobiliario: equipment rental

Crecer:  to grow

Convertirse:  to become

Organizar: to plan, to organize, to host (an event)

Su negocio organizaba fiestas y eventos y rentaba mobiliario.  Los primeros cinco años creció muy rápido hasta convertirse en una empresa exitosa.

Her business planned events and rented out equipment.  It grew very quickly the first five years until it became a successful company.

Tener que contratar: have to hire

Hacerse cargo de: to manage, take care of

La logística: logistics

La entrega: delivery

Montar: set up

Desmontar:  tear down, take down

Los meseros: waiters

De manera exponencial: exponentially

Particular: private (eg. Privately owned business)

Tenemos que contratar a meseros y a otro personal que se haga cargo de la logística del negocio, de la entrega de la mercancía, y de montar y desmontar el equipo. Aunque es un pequeño negocio particular, está creciendo de manera exponencial.

We have to hire waiters and other staff to handle the logistics of the business, deliver the merchandise, and set up and take down the equipment. Although it is a small private business, it is growing exponentially.

Cerrar la fábrica: to close, shut down the factory

Quedarse abierto: to remain open, operating

Muchas fábricas se cerraron por el COVID, y las únicas que se quedaron abiertas eran las fábricas de alimentos.

Many factories shut down due to COVID, and the only ones that remained open were the food factories.

El comedor industrial: company cafeteria

El turno matutino: morning shift

El turno verspertino: evening shift

Los protocolos: protocols, procedures

El comedor industrial sigue protocolos muy estrictos durante los turnos matutinos y vespertinos.

The company cafeteria follows strict protocols during the morning and evening shifts. 

Nadie sabe de lo que es capaz: no one knows what they’re capable of (doing)

Hacer limonada con los limones que temenos:  make lemonade from the lemons we have “when life hands you lemons, make lemonade”

El reto:  challenge

Nadie sabe de lo que es capaz de hacer hasta que lo hace. Cuando te enfrentas a un reto, tienes que hacer limonada con los limones que tienes.

No one knows what they are capable of doing until they do it. When faced with a challenge, you have to make lemonade out of the lemons you have.

Renovar el contrato: to renew the contract

Impulsar la economía: stimulate, drive the economy

Agradecer la oportunidad: thank (someone) for the opportunity

“nos salen fuerzas”: we gather strength

Si te pagan, pues mejor: if you’re paid (to do it), even better

La capacidad: skill, ability

Estar en un punto privilegiado: to be in a privileged position

Tener un papel, tener un rol: to play a role

Desear éxito: to wish success
