Job Interview Vocabulary

Human resources: los recursos humanos

Recruiter:  el reclutador, la reclutadora

Recruitment process: el proceso de reclutamiento

Interview: la entrevista

Interviewee:  el entrevistado, la entrevistada

To interview: entrevistar

Candidate: el candidato, la candidata

 

The HR recruiter is responsible for interviewing all of the candidates for the position.

●      El reclutador de recursos humanos se encarga de entrevistar a todos los candidatos para el puesto.

To apply for a job: solicitar un trabajo, aplicar a un trabajo

Before accepting a job offer, you should ask about job benefits and express your salary expectations.

●      Antes de aceptar una oferta de trabajo, deberías preguntar por las prestaciones laborales y expresar tus expectativas salariales. 

 

To hire:  contratar

To sign a contract: firmar un contrato

Employment contract: el contrato de empleo, el contrato laboral

Trial period: el periodo de prueba

Interview Questions and Possible Answers

Ice-breaker questions (be sure to use the feminine form for women)

●      Tell me about yourself. What’s your name? Education, experience, hobbies, current situation.

Regarding past experience

●      What were your responsibilities and duties in your former job?

■      Me encargaba de responder a las llamadas telefónicas, programar citas y atender las preguntas de nuestros clientes.

■      I was in charge of taking phone calls, scheduling appointments, and responding to our customers’ questions.

●      Which project or job in your career have you considered the most successful? Of which are you most proud?

○      ¿Cuál proyecto o trabajo considera el más exitoso de su carrera? ¿Cuál le dio más orgullo?

■      Mi mayor orgullo es haber gestionado un contrato mundial con un cliente extranjero.

■      I’m most proud of managing a global contract with an overseas customer.

●      Describe a time that you had to work very hard to learn something or obtain something.

○      Describa un momento en el que haya tenido que esforzarse mucho para aprender algo o conseguir algo.

■      Cuando empecé en mi puesto, no hablaba mucho inglés.  Pero después de estudiarlo y practicarlo en mi tiempo libre cada día, fui mejorando poco a poco. Finalmente, me siento cómodo cuando tengo que colaborar en inglés con otros miembros del equipo.

■      When I started in my position, I didn’t speak much English.  But after studying and practicing it in my free time each day, little by little I got better.  Finally, I feel comfortable when I need to collaborate with the other members of my team in English.

●      What’s the greatest risk you have taken? How did it turn out and what did you learn?

○      ¿Cuál es el mayor riesgo que ha tomado? ¿Cómo resultó y qué aprendió?

■      ¿El mayor riesgo? Bueno, no tiene nada que ver con el trabajo. Pero la verdad es que el mayor riesgo fue cuando le pedí a mi esposa que se casara conmigo. Ella sabía que yo quería buscar otra vida fuera de mi país, y aun así confió en mí y aceptó. Aprendí que si realmente tienes una meta en la vida, en este caso, la mujer de mis sueños, tienes que arriesgarte y hacer un gran esfuerzo de fe.  Si es tu destino, saldrá a tu favor. 

■      The greatest risk? Well, it has nothing to do with work.  But truth is, the greatest risk is when I asked my wife to marry me.  She knew that I was seeking another life outside my country, and still she trusted me and said yes.  I learned that if you really have a goal in life—in this case, the woman of my dreams—you have to take a risk and a leap of faith.  If it’s meant to be, it will work out for you.

●      Tell me about a situation in which you felt like giving up but didn't.

○      Cuénteme de una situación en la que haya querido rendirse, pero no lo haya hecho.

■      En mi trabajo anterior, me tocó aprender la programación de software para implementar un nuevo proyecto. Nunca había tomado clases en eso y para mí fue una curva de aprendizaje bien difícil. Sin embargo, logré enseñarme y cumplí todas las expectativas del proyecto. Fue un momento de gran orgullo en mi carrera.

■      In my previous job, I had to learn software programming to implement a new project.  I had never taken classes in this and for me, it was a steep learning curve.  Nevertheless, I managed to teach myself and met all expectations for the project.  It was a very proud time in my career.

 

Personality, character, and qualifications

●      What are your strengths and weaknesses?

○      ¿Cuáles son sus puntos fuertes y débiles? 

■      Mis puntos fuertes son que aprendo rápido y trabajo bien en equipo. Mis puntos débiles son que soy perfeccionista y a veces analizo demasiado antes de actuar.

■      My strengths are that I learn quickly and work well in a team.  My weaknesses are that I’m a perfectionist and sometimes analyze too much before acting.

●      Where do you see yourself in 5 or 10 years? Does this position align with your long-term expectations?

○      ¿Cómo se ve en 5 o 10 años? ¿Coincide este puesto con sus expectativas a largo plazo?

■      Dentro de 5 años habré asumido un puesto gerencial y junto con mi equipo habremos entrado en nuevos mercados por todo el mundo.  Este puesto inicial es ideal porque me dará la oportunidad de aprender sobre el sector y colaborar con varios directores de la empresa.

■      Within 5 years I Will have assumed a management position and together with my team, we will have entered new markets around the world.  This initial position is ideal because it will give me the chance to learn about the industry and work with several company executives.

●      How would your co-workers describe you? And your boss? 

○      ¿Cómo lo describirían sus compañeros de trabajo? ¿Y su jefe?

■      Yo diría que tanto mis compañeros de trabajo como mi jefe me describirían como trabajador, ambicioso, y compasivo.

■      I would say that my co-workers as well as my boss would describe me as hard working, ambitious, and compassionate.

●      How do you handle pressure?

○      ¿Cómo maneja la presión?

■      Cuando siento que el estrés llega a un nivel en el que ya no puedo pensar con claridad, salgo a tomar aire fresco y escucho música relajante durante un par de minutos.

■      When I feel the stress getting to a level at which I can no longer think clearly, I step outside for some fresh air and listen to relaxing music for a few minutes.

●      What motivates you?

○      ¿Qué es lo que le motiva?

■      Me motiva ver que el trabajo que hago ayuda a los demás y, sobre todo, cuando las otras personas muestran su agradecimiento.

■      I am motivated by seeing that the work I do helps others, and most of all, when other people express their gratitude.

●      What are you passionate about — both at and outside of work?

○      ¿Qué le apasiona–tanto dentro como fuera del trabajo?

■      In my ideal job, I would work in a team of open-minded and motivated individuals.  It would be a position with advancement opportunities, and would allow me to share my experience and knowledge with my colleagues.
